Why “expanded”  type copper mesh matters for impulse grounding:
Because it is a single piece of metal, there are zero mechanical or electrical joints within the mesh. Every intersection is a cold‑worked node with lower resistance and lower inductance than a crimped or welded crossing.

Selecting mesh size for impulse:

  • Small diamonds (LWD 25 mm) → lower inductance, better for high‑frequency (fast‑rise lightning).

  • Larger diamonds (LWD 50 mm) → lower cost, acceptable for slower surges (switching transients).

  • Rule of thumb: Use LWD ≤ 30 mm for lightning protection systems (LPS) Class I.

Features

1 Extremely Low Inductance (The Primary Goal)

  • Expanded mesh behaves as a continuous conductive plane for high‑frequency currents (lightning, 1 MHz – 10 MHz).

  • The diamond geometry provides multiple, short parallel paths – lower loop inductance than welded rectangular mesh.

  • Typical inductance: For a 1 m × 1 m expanded sheet, inductance can be < 0.2 μH (vs. 0.5 μH for welded mesh, vs. 10 μH for a single 10 m rod).

2 Improved Skin Effect Utilization

  • Impulse currents travel on the surface (skin depth in copper at 1 MHz ~ 0.066 mm).

  • Expanded mesh has high surface area per unit mass because the strands are thin and have exposed edges from the stretching process.

  • For the same copper weight, expanded mesh can carry more impulse current than solid strip or round wire.

3 No Welded Joint Weak Points

  • In woven/welded mesh, the intersections are potential failure points under high di/dt (localised heating, arcing).

  • Expanded mesh has integral nodes – no dissimilar metals, no heat‑affected zones. It can withstand repeated lightning strikes without degradation.

4 Flexibility & Conformability

  • Expanded mesh rolls easily and conforms to uneven soil, trenches, or building foundations.

  • It can be cut with tin snips and lapped without requiring special tools.

5 Corrosion Behaviour

  • Bare expanded copper is suitable for most soils (pH 5–8).

  • For aggressive soils, tinned expanded copper is used. Tinning does not harm impulse performance because skin effect at lightning frequencies keeps current in the outer tin layer (which is also a good conductor).

Applications

1. Power system (core use):

Grounding devices for large power plants, substations, high-voltage transmission lines, converter stations (ultra-high voltage direct current)

2. Lightning protection and weak current system:

communication base stations (especially mountaintops and unmanned stations), data centers, precision electronic equipment rooms, radar stations, broadcasting transmission towers
